Released 11/19/09Winners at 11 fairs receive cash prizes and award banners
Portland, Maine – Maine’s Oakhurst Dairy continued its support of 4-H Youth Development Programs in Maine and New Hampshire this year, as the family-owned dairy awarded $3,900 in cash prizes to this year’s young winners at 11 fairs in both states.
At the fairs, youth between the ages of 9 and 18 displayed cows they cared for, clipped, and groomed, and each champion in the showmanship category received $100 from Oakhurst and an Oakhurst banner recognizing his or her winning efforts.
“Each year, 4-H teaches the next generation of dairy farmers, through hands-on participation, what it takes to be a successful farmer,” said Oakhurst Dairy President Stan Bennett.
“We’re proud to support 4-H in its continuing work with these kids, as well as in raising awareness of dairy farming in local communities. That’s important to us as a local, family-run dairy.”
This year marks Oakhurst’s fifth year supporting 4-H at fairs in Maine, and the third year supporting 4-H at fairs in New Hampshire. During this time, Oakhurst has contributed nearly $20,000 to the 4-H Youth Development Program.
