The Maine Public Relations Council (MPRC) Honored Three Individuals at its Annual Conference on October 15, 2009

John Diamond, Executive Director of External Affairs, University of Maine System, received the Edwards L. Bernays Award, in recognition of his professional contributions to the public relations industry and Maine communities. Diamond began his career as a news reporter and has since worked in radio, TV, served on the Maine State Legislature and for the past 22 years has worked for the University of Maine System.

“During his lengthy and highly visible career, John has impressed many people,” said award presenter Russ Donahue, Bernays 2008 recipient. “He has been described as “blessed with extraordinary intellect”, an “exceptional work ethic and strong character.” Another has described him as a “bright, modest and insightful state leader.”

The Bernays Achievement Award, created in 1987, is the highest honor bestowed by the Maine Public Relations Council to a single practitioner. An honorary member of MPRC until his death, Edward L Bernays is recognized as the father of public relations for a lifetime of work integral to the recognition of public relations as a profession with scientific grounding.

Joe Payne, Casco Baykeeper®, Friends of Casco Bay, was honored with the 2009 MPRC Lightship Award, presented to an individual outside the public relations field. Recipients are recognized for their ability to interact and successfully communicate with the public and the media. A Maine native, Joe presents programs each year to community groups, volunteers and donors; he believes the more people understand the better protected Casco Bay will be.

Cynthia Faulkner received the 2009 President’s Award, in recognition for service to MPRC and president, Tami Kennedy. Faulkner, president of Faulkner Consulting is a communications strategist whose spent her career in public affairs, advocacy outreach and government relations. She has been a member of MPRC for 5 years.

Now in its 34th year, the Maine Public Relations Council is a professional association of Maine public relations practitioners.
