Released 8/19/08PORTLAND, ME – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “VoteForBusiness Bandwagon” visits Portland on Thursday, August 21 for a press conference opposing federal Card Check legislation.
The Card Check bill, likely to resurface early in the next Congress, would allow unions to force workers in Maine and across the country to say publicly whether they want to form a union, essentially abolishing secret ballot elections in unionization drives.
Starting at 11:00 a.m., executives from the U.S. Chamber, the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Maine State Chamber will brief the media about how Card Check could harm businesses and workers across the state. From 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., the U.S. Chamber’s “VoteForBusiness Bandwagon” will be parked at Monument Square in downtown Portland. With its laptops and high speed Internet access, Maine residents can register to vote and easily update their information aboard the bus and learn first hand from U.S. Chamber representatives about the issues facing this country.
Featured speakers include:
• Glenn Spencer, executive director, U.S. Chamber’s Workforce Freedom Initiative
• Leaders from the Maine business community, including the Maine State Chamber and Portland Regional Chamber
The “VoteForBusiness Bandwagon” launched in Atlanta on August 8 and will cross 32 states and cover over 8,000 miles before reaching both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. For more information regarding the “VoteForBusiness Bandwagon” please visit www.voteforbusiness.com.
