Video from the XBox 360 - PS3 - Wii Showdown

For those of you that didn't catch my segment on the new gaming consoles (PS3, XBox 360 and the Wii) on 207 the other night, take heart. WCSH has posted a streaming video of the segment. If you have trouble with that link, just go to the 207 home page and scroll down to 207 Video; my segment is called 207 Gaming.

That's me and Rob Caldwell opening a can of whup ass on some of Dr. Doom's henchmen.

What do I recommend? I own and enjoy my 360, but after playing all three, I covet the Wii.

$700 for a PS3? How exactly did you get to that number? I don't think playing the PS3 or the 360 on a small non HD screen is going to show anything about what the consoles can do. I think this is really misleading apart from the inaccurate prices mentioned.

Praneeth,

Good call; the base level PS3 lists at $599, not $699. However, the 60gig option lists at over $725 from the prices I just found online.

Also, you're right that the PS3 and 360 look sweet on HD. I enjoy that at home, but what they had set up in the studio was just an SD TV.

Since 207 broadcasts in SD showing it on an HDTV wouldn't have made much of a difference.

Appreciate the feedback, though.

Rich,

Thanks for taking my comments seriously, I think I sounded rather rude on my first post, I apologize. However the retail price of the base level PS3 is not $599 as you listed in your response. It's $499. The high end 60GB model is $599 at retail (not $699). This is the MSRP and is what most legitimate retailers including Gamestop, EB Games, Amazon, have to sell it at. The online quotes you saw for $725 are from guys who bought the system for resale during the holidays and are trying to resell at a profit. If you look at the going prices on ebay right now you'll see that they are all selling for very close to the MSRP which is $499 for the 20GB PS3 (base model) and $599 for the 60GB PS3.
In addition if you are a PS2 owner you can get $100 off by trading in your old PS2 to a Gamestop or EB Games (Since the PS3 runs all PS2 games you won't be needing that anymore). That effectively reduces the price to $499 for the high end model for more than 40 million Americans who own the PS2.
Best regards.

Praneeth,

Where were you when I was doing my research, man?!?

I was actually going to create a post asking for someone to give me some time on their PS3 so I could do a more throrough job. The 360 was my own from home, the Wii came from the producer's son, (thanks, Jake!) and no one we could find had a PS3.

I spent half of Monday running from retailer to retailer playing demo versions until they kicked me out of the store!

Seriously, though, 207 isn't meant to compete with 1UP or Attack of the Show or X-Play. It's focus is on providing information to the general public. Your understanding in this area goes way beyond what most viewers of 207 know, so we're trying to introduce them to things they may not have known before.

I often get frustrated when I read about SEO or email marketing or even the Internet in general in mainstream media...I feel they just don't get it. However, I know that they're not writing for me, they're writing for the average person.

That being said, I should have gotten my numbers right.

Take care.

No worries at all. I understand, its just that the PS3 is getting so much negative press lately for (possibly) legitimate reasons like the lack of compelling titles that I didn't want the general public who doesn't know either way to make a decision for the wrong reasons. It's expensive enough as it is! I'm just defending my own $599 investment. I think the Wii is a great system but if you play something like Motorstorm (an exclusive PS3 title) that will be released officially in March on an HDTV you just can't live with the kind of graphics that the Wii has. For the casual gamer to play with family, I think you can't beat the Wii. For a sports fan, you compare something like Virtua Tennis 3 with Wii Tennis and there's no real comparison there either.
Anyway, I appreciate your candid response.
Take care.
