The REAL Secret is that It's NOT a SECRET!
It amazes me how much our society loves hype. The "IT" hype of the moment is, of course, The Secret. Its premise is positive and yes, I do firmly believe one's mindset is the leading indicator of one's success (or the lack thereof). I also believe that The Secret is missing half the message an "IT" phenom of this kind should be sending. Not only is a powerful vision and an empowering mindset important to achieving success, but one also has to DO something. That being said, a more positive collective consciousness is something the world could use right now. And there's nothing wrong with millions of people spreading good vibes around as long as we peer over our collective rose colored glasses from time to time.
Back to the discussion at hand; all successful people are leaders, even if only a leader of one. Leaders have two basic roles in business or otherwise. One role is that of vision; the other, that of action. In the visionary role leaders define direction. In the action role leaders must... well, act. A leader takes action to move or lead others in the direction set out in the vision.
Ken Blanchard, the author of the many "One Minute ..." books wrote that he once asked Max Dupree, author of Leadership Is an Art, what he felt was the most important role of a leader. Dupree compared the role of a leader to that of a third-grade teacher who keeps repeating the basics. “When it comes to vision and values, you have to say it over and over and over again until people get it right.”
To vision and values I would add your BOLD mindset or your empowering paradigm. It's with a clear vision and a powerful mindset that successful leaders walk the fine line balancing their roles of visionary and implementer. This fine balancing act is the focus of our Business Boot Camp and the Ocular Forum. The next Boot Camp is a fast-start 8-week program beginning 4/25. The Ocular Forum picks up where that ends on 6/26. Don't you wish business really DID take the summer off?
Be BOLD - Think and then take action.

Thanks for the article. I enjoyed it and always said that this "Secret" phenomenon is strangely secular and hyped up. Back in the 20's Napoleon Hill's book "Think and Grow Rich" had similar details of tapping into the collective universal intelligence. I find it funny how these concepts keep resurfacing. Like you said, it requires at least some action to make your dreams come true.

Thanks for the post Attapol. Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich and Law of Success books are favorites of mine. Before Hill there was Charles Haanel and his book from the 1920s The Master Key System, which was one of the sources Barnes references in The Secret. What's old is new. Thanks again. Lynnelle

I'm not sure how I got to your site (I just kept following links). I have been reading all of the comments today about "The Secret" and found myself here. So... while I'm here, I'd like to comment.
I believe the concepts keep resurfacing because there is something to them. I have read most of the popular books for the last 25 years and applied what I have learned to find myself quite often, living my dreams. What people don't get is that your thoughts have an effect on everything from your DNA to the energy that surrounds you.
The Institute of HeartMath, a highly respected institute that studies the human heart, has some very interesting studies that show the influence of our thoughts and emotions. I have also done a demonstration for years to show people how powerful their thoughts are. My emotions of fear coming from my thoughts cause a strawberry to mold while a "love" strawberry stays fresh. Sounds crazy but so does a lot of other things that are fact.
People miss the boat when they think it is about thinking happy thoughts and that is all there is to it. I create mental clarity concerning the goal and then and only when I can feel the emotions like gratitude & expectation from head to toe due to my clarity, beliefs (conscious and subconscious beliefs) and passion for my goal, does anything happen. What happens is that I get very inspired ideas to do certain things and then I follow through. I keep my mind focused clearly on the goal as I take action steps while using a process to remove the feelings of doubt and fear of failure. I have used this process to attain houses, cars, jobs, opportunities of all kinds and most of all, peace of mind. It works every time when I do these things and it all starts with the mental picture and my thoughts.
Yes, in a nutshell you could say I am thinking happy thoughts because the passion I have for my goal creates a happy thought in a sense but that is the tip of the iceberg. We have a tremendous resource that most people don't use. When you learn how to use it, it is amazing and a lot of good can be done.

Your note is insightful, Teri. This phenomenon is about much more than thinking happy thoughts. Equally it is not about laying blame on people who encounter bad things in their lives. That being said, I've also been studying the concepts of mind-body; collective consciousness; power of intention, quantum entanglement; etc. and I am a firm believer that we DO create our own reality.
If you haven't read these, and you care to study further, I highly recommend these books. (General) The Intention Experiment by Lynne McTaggart; (Philosophical) The Self-Aware Universe by Amit Goswami; (Science) Evolve Your Brain by Dr. Joe Dispenza
Thanks for the note. I'm glad you found us!
