Everyone in your organization should be as powerful as possible. Think about it…When your janitor is powerful, the CEO doesn’t need to mop the floors!
Most people wouldn’t use the word “powerful” to describe a janitor. I do; I was once a janitor!
The point is that every single member of your team should be contributing to the power of the organization. As each individual becomes more powerful, the team performs to its potential.
A powerful janitor is someone who understands his responsibilities and has the personal power to perform his duties to his fullest potential. A powerful janitor would be educated in the systems, tools and supplies needed to maintain his area of responsibility. He would be involved and integrated into the operation so he could make sensible recommendations for improvements.
Most of all, your powerful janitor needs to know that he has the opportunity to reach new levels of personal responsibility and rewards proportionate to his contributions to the organization. He needs to know he has the trust of his supervisors and the support to reach his personal goals.
He needs to know his work is appreciated.
Isn’t that what everyone wants?
Experts now believe that providing employees with opportunities for personal improvement is one of the best ways to motivate your workforce. In other words, give your employees the opportunity to develop personal power both on the job and in personal life and you’ll have more motivated and productive employees. Increase the power of the individual and you increase the power of the organization.
The CEO has his job; the janitor has his. When each has the power to do his job effectively and efficiently, the result is increased synergy, loyalty, dedication and ultimately…profit.
