With the H1N1 “Swine” Flu being the leading news item in the media, are you washing your hands more often?
As a child my mother put white gloves on my hands at amusement parks, then removed them when I ate. I grew up being very much aware of germs, bacteria, fungus, and viruses! Fortunately, my mother taught me that the surfaces I touch may contain germs and the importance of washing my hands frequently and thoroughly.
Once my mother caught me putting coins in my mouth. She told me that a “dirty man who picked his nose” touched those coins. I never put another coin in my mouth again!
Now as an adult, I know that frequently touched surfaces such as door knobs and money have the potential to spread infection. I cover my hand with my sleeve when turning door knobs; push doors open with my foot and always use the paper towel I used to dry my hands in a public bathroom to open the door to exit.
So with the Swine Flu looming over society, I am thanking my mother for teaching me good hygiene and the importance of washing my hands frequently and thoroughly. What’s your story?
