Why iDon't care which phone is better

In the '90s, Mac vs. PC became a religious battle for our souls. It continued but was overshadowed by the false idol called the Blackberry. Then Apple created the iPhone. You would have thought that would have sparked another crusade. But the rivalry was pretty much lukewarm.

This month,B Google, Motorola and Verizon committed heresy:

And the iPhone faithful have fired back:

No one is saying the Droid phone (to be released Nov. 6) is an iPhone killer. But there are a ton of comparisons between the two phones. If you're wondering what's the fuss, Verizon offers this demonstration video:

Very helpful is this chart comparing smartphones:

One difference that is getting a lot of press lately is that the Droid offers turn-by-turn directions with Google Maps. This creates more problems for GPS device makers than it does for Apple.

To me, it looks like a wash. I can't tell which phone will be the better deal. It's going to come down to religion. Are you an iPhone or Droid?

There are two important things worth noting.

First, Google makes the Android system that powers the Droid phone. The 1,000-pound gorilla of online apps and services has the ability to make everything work very well on Android phones. Can they use it to crush the iPhone? Probably not. Ask Microsoft how that worked for them. (The answer will rhyme with antitrust suit.) But it should give us pause about putting all our eggs in one third-party basket.

Second, whether this eats into the iPhone market share is guesswork. But I guarrantell you that it's going to increase the market share for smart phones. More people are going to be using very powerful mobile devices. The deadline for having a mobile marketing strategy just got closer.

WHERE'S THE MONEY FOR APP DEVELOPERS?

On Monday, I highlighted how a cellphone app developer created multiple revenue streams for an app. One avenue not covered is to set a price and sell it in the App Store for the iPhone.

Ben Parr of Mashable has a primer on app pricing in OPEN Forum. It's an interesting read that gives you an idea of how hard it is to make money this way.

To further complicate things and add to development costs, Apple has opague processes for approving and rejecting apps. You may need to make some changes to get past the gatekeepers.

BY THE WAY

When I was watching videos of Marting Lindtrom talking about Buyology,I noticed he was talking to someone from Americhip.

That's the company that makes the video player that fits into magazine pages. I don't know if they will revolutionize advertising. But I believe lightweight, disposable video players will be the next evolutionary step in video distribution.

It will be very cheap and easy to rent these players loaded with a movie or television show. Attach a cable that hooks it to the TV set, you will have the next DVD killer. Especially since you can take the player anywhere it's not possible to have a device with a screen.

HOLIDAY PREP

Earlier this week I went through some ideas for competing with the big retailers this holiday season. Gail Goodman writes about something I didn't offer in Entrepreneur.com. She has some ideas on how to keep in contact with your customers. You can use the refreshed connections to get feedback on what you need to be doing this holiday season. Target and Walmart won't be doing that.
