Jason W. Swiger Memorial Foster Care Scholarship Established
Honoring a Maine Army Soldier
On March 25, 2007, Sgt. Jason W. Swiger, of South Portland, Maine, was killed in Iraq by a suicide bomber while on patrol handing out candy to local children. Sgt. Swiger grew up in a home occupied by many foster children in South Portland. Swiger was always trying to help others, and see them for who they really are. As Sgt. Swiger wrote in his high school senior journal, Nothing in this world would please me more than to see the world, one day, look at people for who they really are and what they are capable of doing.
The Jason W. Swiger Memorial Foster Care Scholarship has been established to allow foster youth in Maine, like Sgt. Swiger, to reach their dreams and full capability. The Jason W. Swiger Memorial Foster Care Scholarship has been created through the National Scholarship Fund's Maine Program, Sgt. Swigers widow, Alanna Swiger, and his mother, Valorie Swiger.
Sgt. Swiger was fortunate to be able to live his life long dream of serving in the Army 82nd Airborne Calvary. The Jason W. Swiger Memorial Foster Care Scholarship will provide an opportunity to Maines deserving foster youth to further their dreams and continue their education.
The Jason W. Swiger Memorial Foster Care Scholarship, and other scholarships for these youth aging out of foster care, are being created by the National Scholarship Fund, to help bridge the financial gap left by many traditional scholarships and grants that may not entirely pay for tuition, room and board, books, computers, college supplies, etc. Through efforts such as this, the National Scholarship Fund will help these deserving young adults not only receive a college education, but to graduate with a degree debt free.
With the appropriate funding, the first award of the Jason W. Swiger Memorial Foster Care Scholarship will be distributed in the Fall of 2007 to a deserving high school graduate who has aged out of the foster care system in Maine. This will allow a deserving youth in Maine to achieve their career goal, just as Jason did.
Tax Deductible Donations to this and other NSF scholarships can be sent to:
